March ROC Run
North Fork Smith River
Trail & Campout
March 24-25, 2007

By Steve Freeman

The day started around 6:30am Saturday morning for the Fortuna group: Norm and daughter Alaina, Shane and son, and Stitch and myself.  On the road by 7:00am, making it to the Lucky Casino around 9:15.  Here we met up with Tony and his wife-Tracy,

Rusty & Chris, topped off with gas & extra food, and headed off to the Smith River North Fork Campground, arriving around 10:30.  Brett and his group from Crescent City were ready and waiting.  For some, it was just a day run, for the rest of us it was time to pick out a campsite.

Finally, it was time to hit the trail, behind Brett as our Trail Leader.  We all aired down before reaching the 1st obstacle—an uphill climb of about 1 ½ miles.  That dropped us out on the old McGrew Trail which we took west, towards the “Little Sluice”.  This is where the fun began!  The C-City Toyotas led the way followed by Rusty and the rest of the ROC group.  This was the first time Rusty got to test his newly rebuilt rear axle that he and Brett had worked on…..the rocks were large and wet, but with good driving skills, Rusty made it up.  Next were Tony & Tracy, at which point Tracy became part of the film crew.  Tony’s Jeep, having a limited slip in the rear, was a great help getting over and thru the Sluice with only damage to the right passenger step.  I think he might be in the market for rock sliders.  Then it was Norm’s turn, also with a limited slip and (did I say) rock sliders. Shane had to show his great driving skills, as he was open front & rear.  At one point it seemed like the rocks might win—trying to pull his Cherokee over onto the passenger side. Shane was able to stop before this happened, we were able to put a tow strap through the driver and passenger window to keep him on all fours!  After all the excitement of the Little Sluice, we took lunch.

After lunch we continued on the Trail, headed back towards Camp.  It was now, that Rusty’s driver side, rear tire decided to come off!  Not sure why…just glad it happened on the Trail and not the highway.  All made it back to Camp, Tony & Shane headed back home, with much to talk about!

Chris had stayed in Camp during the day and we were sure glad he did—especially around 3:00am when the rain started! The large tarp that Chris put up, sure helped when Norm & I decided at daybreak to pack up and head towards home.  Thanks Chris!

We said our goodbyes, headed home via the McGrew Trail to Shelley Creek and Hwy 199.

          Great Trail Run!!

                Thanks Brett!

Below is a map of the run that Steve Freeman compiled, using his GPS and Google Earth.  Pretty cool!
