Red Mountain Creek Run
April 16, 2005

For our April 2005 run, we decided to explore BLM land in the Red Mountain Creek area in southern Humboldt County.   The plan was to meet at the Sentry Market in Garberville at 9:00 a.m.   I loaded my Bronco on the trailer on Friday evening in preparation for the early start from Eureka.  Wes Fahlgren was my passenger for the day because he twisted the sector shaft in his 2001 Toyota Tacoma and it hadn’t come in yet.  Wes and I had a nice ride down to Garberville in my Powerstroke and got passed on the way by Kurt Weiermann in his new 2005 Unlimited Rubicon.

In total we had 9 rigs show up, including Bruce Cann of BLM in his “company” S10 pickup.  BLM needs to get some better rigs for their staff!  Tom Valee had his brother-in-law Tony Chess riding shotgun in his Wrangler YJ which got the distinction of being the most stock vehicle there, except of course for Bruce’s pickup!  That won’t last for long, because I heard that Tom has already ordered lost of parts for it!  Others that showed up were Steve Freeman (Wrangler TJ), Rocky & Donna Clark (Donna’s Wrangler TJ), Kurt Weiermann (Unlimited Rubicon), Mark Casteel and his daughter Diane (Toyota Extend Cab), and Jim Boyett (1979 CJ5).

Once we reached the trail, Rocky immediately started deflating his tires.  Fortunately none of the rest of us did because low air pressure and 4-wheel drive proved not to be necessary for the run.  We spent most of the day exploring old logging roads and driving through some pretty thick brush.  Lots of scratches on some of those new paint jobs!  Although the run wasn’t challenging, the weather was sunny and warm
and we all had a great time.  We ran out of roads to explore about 3:00 and decided to pack it in.

The real action happened after the run.  While I was unloading my Bronco off the trailer at home, my shift linkage broke inside the steering column so I had to lift the hood and shift it by pulling on the linkage while Kat drove it off the trailer and into the garage.  Additionally, Jim Boyett got stopped by the CHP for speeding while he was trying to get a running start up Benbow Hill.  Fortunately, he used his suave personality to talk the lady officer out of giving him a ticket!

Happy Trails!

Below are a few photos of the run, hopefully I will get more from the members
